In his first workers' compensation insurance rate decision, our new California Insurance Commissioner Steve Pozner has applied his experience as a businessman in a way which can help you save money on your insurance right now.

He ruled:

Current rates are more than 50% too high, even with the savings since 2004
He ordered an immediate cut of 14.2% in the "pure premium rates" used by all insurers in setting their rates, effective 7/1/07
He created a special task force to evaluate the whole process in setting these "pure premium rates"

Since Posner's ruling, some insurers have cut their rates by 14.2%, some have cut them more, as high as 30%, and some have either cut them less or not at all. But you should know, the rate filings are only part of the story, every insurer also has the discretion to vary your rate quote by as much as down 40% or up 25%, depending on their own "schedule" of risk evaluations. Do you know what your "credit" or "debit" is now? Are you getting the best credit, or lowest price available from that insurer? Has anyone even talked with you about this?

And don't overlook the importance of your experience modification. Are your losses being handled properly, reported and accounted for correctly, and is your payroll properly classified? Have you seen your experience rating form and had a planning session to get to the lowest possible experience modification for your operations?
